Who we are

At Rescued Clay, we believe that clay, often discarded during construction projects, deserves a new purpose—not just as a material for creating art but as a means to build connections and promote sustainability. Each year, tonnes of clay from London's construction sites end up in landfill. By rescuing this material, we reduce waste while creating opportunities for sustainable practices. Clay holds a unique place in both art and community – it connects us figuratively by bringing people together and literally as a binding material that can incorporate other forms of waste. This dual role inspires everything we do.

Our work spans three interconnected areas: reclaiming and preparing clay for reuse, providing spaces for learning and making, and exploring innovative applications for rescued materials through research and design. Together, these efforts form a holistic approach to sustainability, creativity, and community building.

The Clay factory

Our processing facility in Park Royal transforms construction site clay into material suitable for ceramics. Through careful sorting, cleaning, and processing, we prepare clay that would otherwise go to waste. This rescued clay becomes the foundation for our studio work, community projects, and research initiatives.

The process begins with collecting clay from local construction sites, where excavations often reveal seams of London Clay. This clay, historically used for bricks and ceramics, typically ends up in landfills. At our factory, we sort the clay to remove non-clay materials and contaminants. The material then undergoes drying, crushing, and sieving. The final steps involve mixing and de-airing to create workable clay.

The Pottery Studio

Our pottery studio welcomes makers of all levels to explore and create. We offer structured courses, independent practice sessions, and special events that combine technical skill development with environmental awareness. The studio serves as a hub where people can learn, practice, and connect while working with sustainable materials.

Our programmes range from taster sessions for beginners to advanced courses for experienced makers and outreach programmes. Through these activities, participants engage directly with rescued clay, understanding its properties and potential while developing their skills. The studio environment encourages experimentation and knowledge sharing, creating a community of conscious creators

The Design Lab

Our research space focuses on developing new applications for rescued clay. We document findings, collaborate with artists and researchers, and explore sustainable ceramic practices. Through continuous experimentation and knowledge sharing, we work to expand the possibilities of reclaimed materials.

The lab serves as a testing ground for innovative approaches to clay processing, application, and product design. Our research extends beyond ceramics to investigate sustainable practices in clay processing, firing techniques, and waste reduction. Through collaboration with local artists, researchers, and construction industry partners, we work to develop new methods for utilising rescued clay and sharing these findings with the broader community.
